The institute is focused on the leveraging the proliferation of large data sets and new developments in artificial intelligence to enhance the state of the art in patient care.

We work at the intersection of mathematics, computer science, artificial intelligence, and clinical ophthalmology. We aim to leverage mathematical, statistical, and artificial intelligence modeling to enhance our knowledge and understanding of eye diseases and ultimately improve clinical treatment through our passionate research. We integrate imaging and clinical data to understand disease root causes, improve early diagnosis capabilities, identify potential interventions to both narrow disparities and conserve resources, compare treatments, etc.

The institute is staffed by a diverse group of top technology scientists, some of which are also experienced clinicians specializing in ophthalmic diseases. Through this collaboration, we focus on uncovering insights and new knowledge into the most debilitating eye diseases such as Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, Age-Related Macular Degeneration, etc.

The technology we create in the form of algorithms, repositories and software is intended to further the field of ophthalmology. Thus, it is available to the community via the appropriate regulated channels. Our researchers have access to several national and local databases such as the AAO IRIS® Registry (Intelligent Research in Sight), MEE medical, billing, imaging data sets along with the Retina, Uveitis, and Glaucoma MEE databases as well as the MGB’s RPDR and Biobank repositories. We also have access to the MGB’s ERIS HPC compute capabilities for intensive computational tasks some of our algorithms need.
